**Instead of drawing it, make a written description clear enough so that someone in another room (who does not know the pattern) can draw it exactly.

2)How many little squares are in the 10th figure in the pattern?  Explain how you know.

Classic Stories In Movies

Today in HS math we discussed the movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The movie was based on a comic book of the same name, by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.  The comic draws from 7 characters from historical fiction:
Tom Sawyer
Captain Nemo (from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
Allan Quartermain
Dorian Gray (from the Portrait of Dorian Gray)
Dracula
Mr. Hyde (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)

Parent Open House

Horace Mann will have a parent open house on the evening of September 30th from 6pm to 8pm.

The Place is... England

The view from the double-decker bus in Oxford.  We had to take a bus from the airport to Oxford and then we got on this bus out to the town of Charlbury.

Jeremy's new "equine best friend" - Inca Gold!

We stayed at the Banbury Hill Farm.  As we walked in over the hill, this is who came to greet us.  Inca Gold, a gorgeous and friendly horse.  Unfortunately we didn't have any apples or sugar, but he was quite happy with the extra-long grass we found outside of the fence.

Todd, after a good throw in the egg toss!

  Jeremy entered the egg toss with Todd and managed to make it through the first round, thus saving the honor of us Yanks!  Too bad they didn't make it through round 2.  :(

That's what happened after round two.  Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

The Morris Dancers walk in. KTB - this was for you!

At the wedding there was a special dance in honor of the bride and groom.  This is the kind of dancing that KTB does in her spare (ha!) time.  Ask her more about it.

Off to Jolly Old England

Hi everyone!
I'm writing this now from good old Logan Airport in Boston, but by the time you read it on Friday morning I will be in England. Unfortunately, you still have work to do. Hai can help you if you get stuck, or email me with questions. I will reply on Monday.
1) First, grab a piece of scrap paper and a pencil. Do you have it? Good. Go to #2.
2) Open a new window on Internet Explorer or Firefox. Then type maps.google.com
3) Now that you are in google maps, type "Wantage, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom". You should get a picture of the town where I am staying. Look around. Write on your scrap paper how the town of is different than Boston. Include some things you see.
4) In the lower left corner of the Map you will see a key (ex. |---------| = 500 miles). Use the key to figure out about how many miles from Oxfordshire to Boston. Write your answer on your scrap paper.
5) On your scrap paper, write down what time it is on Boston now. Guess what? Oxford is in a different time zone than Boston. (Yup - I am in the future right now! ;) )
Use google to find out what time it is in England right now. Hint- search for "how to convert time zones". When you find the time in England, write it on your scrap paper.

Are you done? Good. Now you should email your answers from your paper to me. If you are in HS ask KM or Hai for help. If you are in MS ask Hai or MA for help.

I promise I will reply before Monday.

Hello!

Hello to all the students in my CMP 8 and HS MCAS math classes!
I hope that you all had a great first week of school.  I definitely did.

This website will have  two calendars with things that happened in class and stuff for homework.  One calendar show things for the 8th grade CMP class and one calendar shows things for the HS MCAS math class. 
I will add more things to this website, but right now I put a link up for First in Math (when BPS pays the bill!) and where to print your own graph paper (like KM!).

ALL of you have to remember to get your school supplies:

* 3-ring binders for your work (size: 1.5" or 2")
* graph paper
* calculator

Also remember that you all will have a quiz on the time paper we did the first day. 
Ex.
-How many weeks are in one year?
-How many hours in a day?
